Secure Your Home Network:
- Change all default usernames and passwords on all devices connected to your network.
- Enable Wi-Fi protected access if available, which creates a secure network via encryption.
- Activate firewalls on your computer and wireless router. Use a comprehensive security software suite on your computer to help detect threats on the network.
- Use a strong, secure and unique password for your wireless network.
Ok, so here's the deal. I generally agree with these points (except maybe for the firewall on your computer part, generally speaking). However, if you sent this list to, let's say, your parents, would they know what to do? Clearly there's a need for greater awareness around personal and at home security, especially with the Internet of Things movement (I still hate that name). However, are our devices set up to support this for the average user? You could argue that Apple's Airport line of products are doing a good job at this, albeit at an increased cost over competing devices. However, this is where I see devices like the upcoming Eero making a big splash in the coming years.
