On AI

It’s been a long time since my last post, and a few things have happened in the technology world. Let’s talk briefly about AI.
I may even start a full series of posts about AI, as it’s such a massive topic with so many angles worth discussing; ethical, economical, environmental, geopolitical… and of course the pure potential.
Generally speaking, I consider myself to be an optimist. I tend to find myself agreeing with people like Ben Thompson of Stratechery, for example. And I generally feel this way about AI, but it’s not as simple as simply feeling like “everything will be fine.”
I’m very, very excited about the potential of AI. I’ll fully admit it. While I am indeed writing this article by hand, I find myself increasingly turning to AI-enabled tools and workflows in both my work and personal life. And I feel like my efficiency and productivity is indeed increasing as a result.
But I am not reaching for AI when it comes to any of my creative pursuits like music (creating or, of course, listening), or writing (creative or personal writing). And I think this is where a lot of people in my work circles (like at School of Rock), are the most concerned about AI, and I think it’s justified. While I still remain an optimist that the best music will still come from humans, there’s still going to be (and already has been) a lot of disruption in the space.
I’ll have more to say over time, and I’m excited to think through these different avenues out loud here.
